How to choose which idea to write

Sometimes you want to write, but you don’t know what it is you want to write about. If you have dozens of ideas waiting to be worked on, picking one feels impossible.

You aren’t limited to only writing one idea. Your writing time can be broken down across multiple projects, but each project should get its own writing block of at least 10-15 minutes. If you have an hour to write you can work on four projects for fifteen minutes a piece or one project for the full hour.

Deciding based on what you want to write ask yourself:

  1. Which idea is the closest to completion? Is there anything you can knock out of the way in a single writing session?

  2. Which idea means the most to you?

  3. Which idea are you inspired to write?

  4. What is time sensitive? Which has the closest deadline? Anything due within the next week should be a high priority project.

  5. What project are you stuck on? Why? If you’re stuck devote a portion of your writing time to the project, even if you don’t make headway coming back to it each day will eventually break through the reason you’re stuck.

If your projects are scheduled with due dates, you can prioritize by the deadline and the importance of the project. Work through them in this order:

Most Important, closest deadline. > Least important, closest deadline. > Important, farther away deadline. > Least important, farther away deadline. > Important, no deadline. > Least important, no deadline.

NOTE: If there’s something you really feel passionate about working on, that’s what you should be prioritize. Passion is what will keep you writing, if it feels like work, like it’s something you have to do, go to the project you feel the most passion for.
